A
shell mound is comprised mainly of mollusk shells. Like
all middens, shell middens also contain the debris of
human activity and remains of their meals. Some shell
middens are processing remains: areas where aquatic resources
were processed directly after harvest and prior to use
or storage in a distant location. Some shell middens are
directly associated with villages, as a designated village
dump site. In other middens the material is directly associated
with houses in the village; each house would dump their
garbage directly outside the house. In all cases, shell
middens are extremely complex and very difficult to excavate
fully and exactly. However, the fact that they contain
a detailed record of what food was eaten or processed
and many fragments of stone tools and household goods
makes them invaluable objects of archaeological study.

Joe Shekou has recently filed
a SLAPP suit against Gallinas Creek activists in his attempts
to build a giant soccer complex on land he owns on the north
fork of Gallinas Creek. Environmentalists and nearby residents
have expressed concern over the implications that such a
massive complex will mean for the community and wildlife,
and now some of them are being sued for speaking out. (full
story at GallinasCreek.org).
The wetlands of Gallinas Creek are home to the endangered
clapper rail and salt harvest marsh mouse. The proposed
3 acre sports complex sits
in the middle of this habitat and is in the pathway
of a variety of local and migratory birds, river otters
and a wide range of nature enthusiasts. Shekou has a track
record of antipathy towards environmental concerns in this
area [see:
article by Shekou ] The increased traffic, huge paved
parking lot, along with the need to build a large new bridge
over the sensitive creek are more than the area can endure.
At a recent San Rafael Design Review Board meeting, soccer
complex proponents attempted to portray their stadium as
vital for our kids. They imported a sizable contingent of
soccer moms and coaches to lobby the city on their behalf.
The Shekou airport location was presented as the only site
available. We believe that there is a better place for this.
One of the project's architects remarked that nearby buildings
were of the same or similar size, yet none of these buildings
is perched so ominously close to this important wildlife
habitat.
On
Oct 7, 2006, brightpathvideo filmed more clapper rail
sightings on Gallinas Creek, San Rafael, CA. This time,
one was spied feeding on the upper reaches of the creek
near the Frank Llyod Wright Civic Center and (this is
important) in front of the proposed
4 acre indoor soccer facility off the west part of the
north split of the creek at GPS N38.00.49.9, W 122.31.38.6
Pile
driving, outdoor lighting, thousands of car trips, bridge
alterations and ever present loud noise levels will have
a deleterious effect on this, the bay's largest concentration
of federally endangered clapper rails.
